(Picea pungens)
Colorado Blue Spruce has been the most widely planted everygreen in all of North Dakota. It prefers heavier soils, full sun, average moisture and clean cultivation.
The Blue spruce will reach a height of six feet in eight years on a good site. The growth rate after six years should exceed one foot per year. Color varies from deep green to silver-blue. This is probably the most drought tolerant of all spruces and is very deer and pest resistant.
Blue spruce should be planted about 12 feet apart to allow wind movement for cultural disease management. The mature height should be nearly 60 feet tall. The Colorado Blue spruce is grown in Zone 4 and can be moved up to a Zone 2 or down to a Zone 6 without causing the tree additional stress or growing troubles.
